Annie was illiterate. Her daughter Shirley was illegitimate, born in her grandfather’s house beside the tracks in Lewisporte, Newfoundland. The year was 1946 and the war was over. Confederation with Canada was on the horizon. Trains traversed the island, since there were few roads. Tuberculosis and polio, poverty and isolation were hallmarks of the times.
This is the story of a child who strove by faith and courage to overcome her circumstances.
"This story of a girl growing up in outport Newfoundland post-WW2 is vividly portrayed, to the extent that the reader feels he or she is actually there… Poverty is met with resilience, failures and crises with determination, and a reliance on faith. A most enjoyable read."
—Dr. Roger Gordon,
Retired Dean of Science, University of Prince Edward Island
Author of Starting to Frame
"When you read, slow down and picture the word images, hear the dialect, and imagine again a different era. Don’t miss the carefully woven threads of faith… It was easy to get pulled into the story. And like thousands of us, in many ways it’s our story."
—Brian Peddle,
Retired General of The Salvation Army
