“I had a wonderful week at my sister’s as always...until Friday night. I was sharing a bed with my little nephew and he was saying his prayers: ‘If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take’. I felt a stab of foreboding in my spirit...”

In this tragic experience, no real support was given in the Old Colony Mennonite village where they lived. Instead, there was blame and shunning. Mari learned more about the “whys” of such treatment; she also found others who had similar experiences. Conversely, she heard of the wise ways of her grandfather, the Bishop, who had died long before this all had happened.

As her brother Isaac would say: “How we longed for the gentle and compassionate presence of our Grandfather.”

“This book gives a good overview of the Old Colony system and I certainly give my endorsement and encourage reading this book to gain a better understanding of what the Old Colony is all about.”

Mari (Derksen) Klassen grew up in a conservative Mennonite village in central Saskatchewan. At the age of fifteen her mother died unexpectedly, bringing heartache and many challenges. However, this also brought a hunger for more of God and the opportunity to attend Steinbach Bible College. Here she met her husband Ruben and their family story began, as told in Mari’s first book Another Hannah. Today she and Ruben reside in Steinbach, MB enjoying family, church groups and visits from their 4 children and eleven grandchildren. God has been faithful and always illuminated her path, even when the light seemed very dim.
