Each chapter of A Word from His Word: Philippians focuses on a single word or phrase from a short biblical passage. It is the author’s prayer that by returning to a simplified but effective approach to Bible reading, your daily times with God’s word will be invigorated.

Philippians was written by Paul the apostle while under house arrest to encourage and support his readers. He had a remarkable ability to lift himself emotionally from a confined and depressing place and provide others with a boost of vitality. In light of when it was written and the subject matter it covers, the letter remains a useful source of inspiration, education, and encouragement to our modern church and individual Christians.

Gary R. Small came to faith as a teenager, reading the Arthur S. Demoss Foundation’s book, Power for Living. As a university student, he joined the Navigators, who taught the importance of understanding and interpreting passages from the Bible, which led to a lifetime of Bible study. He has taught in adult Bible study, youth group, and Sunday school settings. In his spare time, Gary enjoys being with his wife and three boys, and pursuing outdoor activities.
